Efficient and Compact Multi-Band Radar Design

This project involves a complete design of a radar system that functions in multiple ISM (Industrial, Scientific and Medical) radio bands. A system design including the Printed Circuit Boards, code for the microcontroller and a desktop GUI to interact with the system was designed.

This project involved the design, manufacture and programming of a radar system that would function in multiple ISM (Industrial, Scientific, Medical) RF bands. The hardware design for the system centred around a local oscillator signal generator, an IQ modulator, IQ demodulator and a microcontroller to control these circuits and interact with a desktop PC.

The hardware of the system was designed to be modular, separating the design into RF, Analog Signal Conditioning , Power and Microcontroller sections. The interface between each section was designed to be well-defined and consistent, so that any part of the system could be replaced for flexible functionality.

Software developed for the system allows the user to control the operational frequency of the RF transceiver via a PC connected to the system via USB OTG. The flexible modulation type chosen for the design allows the system to be used as a general purpose RF transceiver, which can be adapted for radar applications.
