NeuroStim: A compact neurostimulator
Emma Scully
Neurostim is an affordable and compact neural stimulator capable of producing novel pulse shapes for use in visual cortex stimulation experiments.
Monash Vision Group is developing The Bionic Eye to restore vision to the blind. When developing neural prosthetics, the parameters we use to stimulate must be carefully selected for the most effective and safe stimulation. One of these parameters is pulse shape - which is why I built NeuroStim. It is capable of producing a variety of pulse shapes so they can be tested in the lab as current stimulators are only capable of producing one shape - a square wave.
NeuroStim is 92% smaller than our current lab stimulator and only $150 AUD - while our current stimulator is over $18,000 AUD. NeuroStim can deliver ramped pulses, sine waves and square waves so that experiments can be run to determine whether other pulse shapes are more effective at stimulating neural tissue.
